About your neighbourhood

Built in 1871 and 1875 respectively, Coleshill Flats and Lumley Flats form part of the historic Ebury Estate and represent an important chapter in Victorian model housing.

The land was provided by the Marquis of Westminster, who granted leases to the Improved Design Dwellings Company (IDDC) to create high-quality homes for working families.

Coleshill Flats, a five-storey block completed in 1871, incorporated innovative building materials intended to reduce construction costs and provided accommodation for 120 families alongside ten ground-floor shops. Although the large number of one-bedroom homes attracted some criticism at the time, the development was widely praised for its design and ambition.

Lumley Flats followed in 1875, completing the estate. In 1984, Peabody acquired the leasehold interest in the residential blocks, while the Grosvenor Estate retained ownership of the shops. Coleshill Flats received Grade II listed status in 1989 in recognition of their architectural and historic significance.

Today, the estate enjoys a central Westminster location, within easy reach of Victoria Station, Sloane Square and Buckingham Palace.
