We know how essential lifts are when it comes to going up and down your building – and how frustrating it is when they’re out of action.

So we’ve set out everything you need to know about lift safety, including everything we do to keep them running smoothly, and how to tell us if they aren’t.

How to report a problem

If there’s an emergency, call us right away on 0300 123 3456

Otherwise, the easiest way to report any issues is online through My Peabody, since it’s available 24/7.

Or, if you’d rather speak to someone, call our Contact Centre team on 0300 123 3456.

How long will you have to wait?

If your lift breaks down, we treat it as an emergency. That means one of our contractors should get there within 4 hours. The only exception is if we get the call late, in which case our out-of-hours contractors might take a bit longer to arrive (we’ll still aim for 4 hours though).

And if the lift breaks down with someone in it, we’ll do out best to get there within an hour. (Again, if the call comes outside of work hours, it might take a bit longer, but we’ll still aim for under an hour.)

What should you report?

Please let us know about anything out of the ordinary. For example:

  • The lift isn’t working, or stops between floors
  • Doors that don’t open or close properly
  • Unusual noises, vibrations, or jerky movements
  • Poor (or no) lighting inside the lift
  • Damaged or unreliable buttons
  • Emergency alarm or communication systems not working
  • Repeated breakdowns or service interruptions

How to use your lift safely

Here are a few ways you can keep you and your neighbours safe:

  • Always wait for the lift to stop completely before getting in or leaving.
  • Don’t force the doors open - or try to stop them from closing.
  • Try not to have more people in the lift than it can hold (there should be a sign inside that tells you the limit).
  • Keep an eye on your children when using it.
  • If the lift feels unsafe or does anything unusual –  don’t use it, and let us know!

What if the lift stops working while you’re in it?

If a lift stops between floors, don’t worry. Just use the emergency alarm or call button inside the lift and we’ll be with you before you know it.

But whatever you do, definitely don’t try and leave the lift without our help – it’s really dangerous.

Our experts are always ready

We know how important being able to get out and about (and up and down!) is, so we have a dedicated Lift Safety Team whose sole focus is making sure your lift is safe, dependable and working.

Alongside lift engineering specialists and approved contractors, we monitor your lifts with regular servicing to make sure they’re in good condition, and meeting all the regulations they’re supposed to such as the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER).
