Families celebrate new playground and community garden at Tachbrook Estate in Pimlico

People on the Tachbrook Estate in Pimlico are enjoying a new playground and ball court, alongside greener shared spaces and an upgraded community centre.

Families celebrated the new facilities at a community event, where children tried out the ball court and playground and joined activities led by a sports coach. There were also games, face painting, ice cream and refreshments.

The playground and ball court were shaped by conversations with residents about improvements they wanted to see on the estate. They give children and young people more space to play, get active and spend time together close to home.

The wider project has also brought new planting and green spaces to the estate. Earlier in the summer, residents and volunteers created a community garden where people can grow herbs, vegetables and fruit. They planted parsley, coriander and other greenery, with support from Frosts Landscapes, who donated tools and plants, helped plant trees and will help maintain the new green spaces.

Residents were joined on the day by local teams from Peabody, the not-for-profit housing association who own and manage the estate, and members of the Tenants and Residents Association. Local councillors from Westminster City Council; Cllr Liza Begum and Cllr Robert Eagleton, also came along to help out.

The planting will help make shared spaces greener and improve biodiversity. It will also provide more shade and help keep parts of the estate cooler during hot weather, which residents had highlighted as important.

Westminster councillor Liza Begum, who represents Pimlico South ward, said on the planting day: “It’s great to see Peabody working so closely with residents. It’s an intergenerational project, so everyone can get involved, and it’s great for health and wellbeing. When you’re living in central London, access to green space can be limited. So, it's nice to have a place where residents can come together, do some planting and get to know their neighbours. It’s brilliant!”

Sue Forsyth, Project Manager at Peabody, said: “Residents told us they wanted better places for children and young people to enjoy, so it was brilliant to see the new ball court and playground being put to use. These improvements have come from conversations with the community, and we hope families will enjoy them for years to come. A big thank you to everyone who got involved, helped bring the garden to life and joined in the celebrations.”

The play spaces, ball court and planting were designed by Turkington Martin in consultation with Tachbrook residents.

The newly upgraded community centre is also open.
