We are working with Opening Doors London to support and connect LGBTQ+ people over 50 in Tower Hamlets. The pandemic has had a significant effect on older LGBTQ+ people, with many already feeling isolated before the outbreak.

If you're over 50 and identify as LGBTQ+ join us on the second Friday of every month from 2pm to 4pm for coffee, cake and conversation at our Sundial Centre, 11 Shipton Street, E2 7RU.

Polly, one of our residents living in Tower Hamlets, shared their experiences of being part of the social group: "I’ve lived in one of the Peabody estates in Tower Hamlets for a long time, and back in the late 1980s I was involved in the local Lesbian and Gay Action Group.

"Most of my friends are spread across London, so it is good to have something more local, particularly as some people are still anxious to travel because of Covid and can, I know, feel isolated. The group attracts people from other neighbouring areas, and before the first lockdown we had started to visit local places like Hackney City Farm. At the moment a few of us meet and chat over coffee in the welcoming atmosphere of the Sundial Centre, but hopefully we will also venture abroad again soon."

Fleur from Opening Doors London told us more about how ODL supports LGBTQ+ people over 50: "Opening Doors support LGBTQ+ people over 50 to live full and vibrant lives, free from isolation, loneliness, and discrimination. We run a range of social events and meetups like the one at Tower Hamlets, as well as activities including trips to Kew Gardens, theatre, cinema and museum outings. We offer our members opportunities to connect, network and develop friendships and community. You can expect a warm welcome, lively conversation and a laugh with other members."
