Apprentice with lady

We are proud to be supporting National Apprenticeship Week this year. As one of the largest organisations in London, we provide a variety of opportunities for our residents and our customers.

We are committed to ‘building talent for the future’ and are passionate about helping people develop to their full potential. This year, we have supported 176 people into apprenticeship roles across our developments and 67 people are doing apprenticeships across Peabody, including 17 people in our Care and Support services.

Here are just a few of our apprentices from across Peabody:

Monika Dixon is a Support Worker at Canonbury Lane, a supported housing scheme in Islington for people who have mental ill health.

Monika said: “I’m almost 60, and at my time of life I’m still wanting to learn and do more. I’ve been working here for 20 years, and Peabody has enabled me to keep growing, changing, and building upon my skills. I did my Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Level 2 a few years ago, and this year I’m doing Level 3.

“I’m very slow, like a tortoise. But Rebecca, one of my customers, is also studying, so we encourage each other and talk together about our assignments. I show Rebecca that I find studying just as challenging as she does.

“Peabody is a great organisation, because it enables you to think: ‘yes, there’s still more in me that I can give back to my customers’ – and the organisation funds my training, so I’m blessed.”

Mazeda Begum is a Support Worker at the Sundial Daycare Centre for older people living in Tower Hamlets.

Mazeda said: “I decided to do an apprenticeship as I was looking to work alongside getting a qualification and gain experience. The application process was super easy and my colleagues, manager and tutor have been a great support system.

"I have learnt many different skills that I’ll carry with me in the future, such as working with older people who have dementia, mental ill health and learning disabilities.

"It has helped me to get out of my shell, and I’ve learnt how to care for others and become a leader in my own right. 15 months on, I now have a permanent job at the Sundial Centre. I feel so fortunate, and would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone interested in gaining a qualification and experience."

Our partnerships with others

YouthBuild
We’ve partnered with YouthBuild to deliver an innovative skills programme in South East London that supports young people into work in the construction industry.

Meet Antony, Billy and Adrian who graduated YouthBuild this year and shared their experiences of the programme with us:

Working with K10 to support young people into apprenticeships

Find out about our partnership with K10 to help local residents into apprenticeships in the construction industry, including on our developments. Three years ago K10 moved into one of our properties, The Gateway Centre, and used the space to double the number of young people they support.

We visited The Gateway Centre before the first lockdown to meet the apprentices and learn how the support and training they receive has impacted their lives:

Creating local apprenticeship opportunities in our construction supply chain

When we build new homes and communities, we work with our partners to create apprenticeship opportunities and local jobs in our construction supply chain. In the last year we have supported 176 people into apprenticeship roles across our developments.

Before the first lockdown we met with apprentices working on our sites to hear first-hand about their experiences:
