The story of the Whitecross Estate begins in 1883, when the Peabody Trust developed two neighbouring estates on either side of Whitecross Street. To the east stood the Whitecross Street Estate, while to the west sat the Roscoe Street Estate—made up of eleven residential blocks, along with a single additional block, known as ‘Block X’, on the eastern side.
Fast forward to the 1950s, and the area was once again shaping the future of London living. As plans emerged for the nearby Golden Lane Estate, Peabody saw an opportunity to reimagine the Roscoe Street Estate. The Trust set about building a new development on the same site, expanding its footprint to include land from the former St Mary’s Church. Originally built in 1868, the church had been destroyed during the Second World War, leaving space for renewal and growth.
Today, the Whitecross Estate spans 2.4 hectares (six acres) and comprises 26 blocks of flats. Home to 432 properties, ranging from one-to three-bedroom homes, it supports a thriving and diverse community of over 800 adults, alongside many families.
