Mayor of Hackney supports young people’s event in Pembury

Supported by the Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville, young people attended a week of activities including dance classes, arts and crafts workshops, and cooking classes where representatives from the Council, Met Police, Arsenal FC and Leyton Orient FC engaged with the young people positively to help support their career goals.  

The event took place as part of our partnership with Hackney Council, where are committed to working together to support the Mayor’s priority to make the area a safer place for everyone, by reducing crime and ASB, youth violence and improving quality of life. 

Vatel Ntankeu Mbami, our Assistant Director of Resident Services said: “We are proud to have brought so many young people together at our community centre, giving them access to the many skills and training opportunities available in Hackney. We have been working with the Pembury community for over twenty years and it is important for us to continue to engage with the talented young people who live on the estate and give them a voice through our community projects.  

“Working closely with residents, local partners and the community, our vision is to make Pembury a place where people are proud to live.  The community centre acts as a hub, bringing people of all ages together. We hope the young people who attended our event today have been inspired and encouraged to achieve their goals.”  

Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, said: “This engagement project with our local partners has been a really important step in our journey towards making Hackney a safe place for everyone. By increasing our engagement with residents, especially our young residents, and supporting their career prospects we hope to increase their quality of life and in turn reduce the rate of crime and anti-social behaviour.

"Young people in Pembury, Clarence Road and the surrounding area have been able to engage with organisations about their futures and enjoy fun activities at the same time, in a safe environment. This work within our communities is ongoing and incredibly important to improving the relationship between us, our partners and our residents.”

Cllr Fajana-Thomas, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “The Pembury community fun day was the penultimate event of a successful project in partnership with our local partners. It has been a great contribution to the work we are doing to make Hackney a safe and welcoming place to live, work and visit. The fun day in Pembury was a great way to round off the project and offer our young residents a safe and friendly environment to engage with the Council’s community safety team, the police and meet organisations who can help them reach their careers goals. This project is part of our long-standing work and commitment to making Hackney safe for all.”

• The Pembury’s Children Community started in 2015 and is led by Peabody and Hackney Council. Working with the community, the programme aims to improve the lives of the 1,000 children and young people who live and around the estate.
