HMRC Letter

Scammers take advantage of key times in the tax year – including the end of the tax year in early April.

Published: 14/03/2025

What to look out for

  • Emails, texts or calls pretending to be HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)
  • Caller ID that looks like HMRC’s number – scammers can fake this, so always double-check by calling HMRC back directly
  • Calls or emails from people pressuring you to send money, often by threatening arrest or legal action
  • Messages containing dodgy links - such as misspelled web addresses, shortened links or links with urgent wording
  • Requests for personal details – HMRC will never ask for personal details like your card number or banking pin

What to do

If you get a suspicious email, text or call:

  • Stop and don’t respond
  • Don’t click links or open attachments
  • Don’t share any personal information
  • Check if it’s genuine with HMRC
  • Report anything suspicious online, forward emails to HMRC and send texts to 60599.
