Some of our volunteers talk about their experiences of volunteering with Peabody.

Michael started volunteering in the Assured Tenancy Conversion Team and within three months was an employed member of Peabody staff within Lettings.

How did you start volunteering at Peabody?
I recently completed a CIH Housing Practise course and immediately wanted to demonstrate my passion for the housing sector by volunteering. Peabody's volunteering program stood out so I applied. After completing an application form, I met managers in the Lettings department and it was swiftly organised following that.

When and how did you become a member of staff through volunteering?
I volunteered for three weeks as a Volunteer Tenancy Conversion Officer when a paid version of the role arose. A successful interview later I was employed full-time on the project.

What impact has volunteering here had on you?
Volunteering has improved my confidence, allowed me to see first-hand how a busy lettings department works together, boosted my knowledge of housing and good practice, as well as my technical ability using Microsoft Office and housing database software.

What’s the best thing about volunteering at Peabody?
The staff – I feel privileged to work with such a supportive and welcoming Lettings department.

If you were going to encourage someone else to volunteer at Peabody, what would you say?
Getting your foot in the door is incredibly important; if you have the time to spare – why not boost your skills and potentially begin a rewarding career.

Alison volunteers at Parkside community and is also part of the volunteering team at Walworth Road.

What made you interested in becoming a volunteer with Peabody?
I became interested in volunteering after I had decided to take voluntary redundancy. I worked as an HR Project Manager and although I enjoyed my role I thought I would use this opportunity to reflect and think about my next adventure.

How did you hear about it?
I am a member of the Quaggy Community Choir who is based at Parkside Community centre and practice every Tuesday. One evening while waiting for the choir to start, I read the community noticeboard and was pleasantly surprised by all the engaging community activities that were available. I tentatively approach the receptionist to enquire about volunteering roles. She was really friendly, welcoming and chatted to me about what volunteering role I was interested in.

The following week I met with the 'receptionist' who I then found out was Rebecca Fenner, the Centre Manager! After an informal chat and filling in a couple of forms, I was ready to start volunteering and I haven't looked back since. As well as volunteering as a receptionist at Parkside I am assisting the Volunteering team and supporting them with the recruitment of new volunteers.

What is your experience of being a volunteer?
My experience of being a volunteer with Peabody has been a positive one. It has provided me with some structure, kept my administration skills up to date and allowed me to maintain connections with people. I am truly impressed with how inclusive the team is though engaging with volunteers, supporting them and promoting opportunities.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering with Peabody?
Do it! Regardless of your skills, the time you can commit there will be a volunteering role there for you. In return, you will work with an inclusive and supportive team, acquire new skills and make connections. Above all, you will great that you have contributed to your community and made a difference.
