Threads is a fashion and textile project for girls aged nine and over.

Funded by Children in Need, the project focuses on empowerment by teaching new skills that heighten aspirations, increase employability and raise self-esteem.

Participants can create their own garments, visit exhibitions, galleries and museums and participate in photoshoots and fashion shows.

Sessions for young people aged nine and over are held at the Pembury Learning Centre, Pembury Estate, Hackney on Saturdays 11am-3pm.

Threads has been featured across broadcast, online and print media, including BBC Children In Need, South London Press, Grazia, BBC Radio 1, Capital Radio, BBC London Radio.

Employment

Several girls have progressed to art and fashion colleges and many others have accessed support from our employment service, with at least four finding a job. Everyone who completes garments is put in for Open College Network qualifications to boost their CVs.

Day trips

Destinations have included the Victoria and Albert Museum, Clothes Show Live, and fashion and textiles museums in Bath and London.

London College of Fashion (LCF) partnership

Threads delivered a successful pilot project in partnership with the LCF, working with female under-18s from Hackney.

One of the highlights was taking Threads participants to a LCF catwalk show in Shoreditch. Both parties will now work together in a long-term partnership.
