A focus on South Thamesmead.
Big ideas for Thamesmead
There's a huge amount going on at Thamesmead – find out more here.
Since the merger of Thamesmead’s biggest organisations into Peabody in 2014, we have been speaking with residents about their views and experience of living in Thamesmead and their hopes for the future.
We've listened to the comments we received and have put together a number of proposals that reflect what we have heard from the community and what we believe we can realistically do.
Here's what you've told us:
You value the town centre and say we should focus our resources on enhancing this. You would like more cafes, restaurants, a bank, a pharmacy and a cinema as well as other entertainment and evening activities. However, you also like the convenience of having local shops close to home.
Enhancing transport connections and reducing isolation is a top priority, particularly outside South Thamesmead. Two-thirds of you said you wanted to see a station in central Thamesmead linking to the DLR or London Overground.
Provisions for young people and children
Thamesmead has a young population and you want proper provision for them. You want to see more activities, facilities and programmes which will empower them and also help to reduce antisocial behaviour.
You want us to focus on local neighbourhood parks close to where you live, rather than a larger park which may not be so easy to access.
New and current homes
As well as providing the necessary transport and social infrastructure, you want to be sure that any new homes benefit local people and that existing homes aren’t forgotten.
Generally, you're supportive because they will bring improvements and opportunities to the area. Thank you for this feedback. Your views are really important to us. They will continue to feed into our plans and help us to focus on long-term priorities
