A look at what Crossrail – and other transport improvements – will mean for Thamesmead.

From 2018 Crossrail will serve Abbey Wood station. This will roughly halve journey times into central London, allowing local people to reach:

  • Canary Wharf in 11 minutes
  • Bond Street in 25 minutes
  • Heathrow airport in 52 minutes

As well as making jobs and opportunities in the capital more accessible to Thamesmead residents, Crossrail will help to bring new businesses and amenities to Thamesmead, making it a more attractive place to live, work and visit.

We're working with the London Borough of Bexley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to look at how we can make the most of Crossrail by improving the public realm around Abbey Wood station and along Harrow Manor Way, creating a gateway into Thamesmead.

We are also working with Transport for London to see how we can bring further transport improvements to the area, such as river crossings and better local bus services.

Other improvements: Lesnes to Crossness

The Lesnes to Crossness Path provides an easily accessible walkway which features a park and seating offering stunning views across Southmere Lake.

Funded by Peabody, the Greater London Authority and the London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT), this has transformed the pathway into a safe and well-used area.
