Peabody in the news

Danny, a former customer of our scheme in Harolds Wood, has been included in a Learning Disability and Autism Leaders’ List.

Danny, below, has autism and dyspraxia. He joined our Care and Support scheme in Harolds Wood in 2012 because he wanted to learn to live independently.Danny said:

"I strongly believe that if you have a mental health issue or a learning disability you should be able to live as everyone else and the do the same things. You shouldn’t be labelled or limited in what you can do."

Danny

Danny spent four years at Harold Wood and, having had the support of  the team there, he then felt ready to move on. He stayed in touch, though, and came back to chair residents’ meetings. He also become an ambassador for supported housing: mentoring prospective and new tenants, giving talks and training around keeping safe; and delivering workshops about using computers.

Danny also became the Vice Chair of Havering’s Learning Disabilities’ Partnership Board working closely with the local council. He sits on various boards that oversee the right care and treatment for people with similar issues, co-presents learning disability awareness training for the local NHS Trust, and speaks at various local and national events. Danny also now works for us at Peabody, supporting customers who have similar issues and helping in interviews for new business.

With all this under his belt, Dawn McClenaghan, our Floating Support Manager, felt that Danny was a perfect choice to be entered into the Dimensions Learning Disability and Autism Leaders List in the ‘Advocacy, policy and the media’ category. This is the UK’s first national listing of people with learning disabilities and/or autism who are helping make things better for themselves and others.

Dawn explains: "Danny is enthusiastic and passionate about improving the health care experience for people with a learning disability and improving the knowledge and skills of staff regarding learning disabilities. He really wants to give back to Peabody and his local community after all the support he has received."

We’re delighted to say that Danny’s nomination was successful. You can find out more about the list here.
