About Upton Village
Upton Village was completed in May 2016 and includes 168 new homes for affordable rent, market rent and shared ownership. The design of the scheme emerged from a competition held in 2012 to celebrate Peabody's 150th anniversary.
The winning design by PCKO Architects includes the sensitive refurbishment of five Victorian hospital buildings as well as new-build flats and houses, including almost 40 per cent family housing. Each home has generous private outdoor space provided through ground floor gardens, private courtyards, balconies and large roof terraces.
This award adds to several recent successes for Upton Village, including winning 'Best Marketing Campaign' at the 2016 National Housing Awards and 'Most Innovative Affordable Housing Scheme' at the Housing Innovation Awards 2017. The scheme was also shortlisted in the 'Best New Place to Live' category at the London Planning Awards 2017, and is in the running for a 2017 Housing Design Award.
Stephen Howlett, Chief Executive of the Peabody Group said:
"Upton Village showcases the very best in affordability, design and sustainability, retaining a variety of historic buildings from the former Plaistow Hospital alongside high-quality new build homes.
The scheme has benefitted the local community by providing almost 60 per cent affordable housing and a range of options to help people to achieve their dream of home ownership. We’re incredibly proud to win this award in recognition for developing the best affordable homes in London."
