Peabody in the news

The relaunch follows a makeover which included a new kitchen fitted by Peabody’s contractors, Axis Europe Plc

More than 100 residents from Thamesmead and the surrounding areas recently attended the relaunch of the over-50s hub, The Atrium. The relaunch follows a makeover which included a new kitchen fitted by Peabody’s contractors, Axis Europe Plc as part of their corporate social responsibility offer.

The Atrium

Axis Europe Plc's CEO John Hayes officially opened the centre. He said: "The Atrium is a fantastic facility and I am happy we were able to be a part of it. Every year our staff volunteer their time for a community project and they have managed to transform this place into a bright and airy space that older residents can enjoy."

Erith & Thamesmead MP, Teresa Pearce said: "It has been fantastic to see so many residents …The hub plays an important role in every-day life for so many of those that are here today, helping not only to reduce isolation but creating many friendships."

While Peabody’s John Lewis, Peabody’s Executive Director of Thamesmead added: "There has been a fantastic turnout for the re-launch of The Atrium, confirming the need for such a venue. Not only does the hub offer friendship but the chance to get involved in activities."

Already home to a darts team and a Chinese and Vietnamese dance group, The Atrium is now also home to over 50s group, Pop in Parlour, who have recently relocated there. Manager John Thompson, an 85-year-old Thamesmead resident, said:

"Today has been lovely. Lots of people have turned out with many visiting The Atrium for the first time as we only moved here three weeks ago. I’d like to thank everyone at Peabody for all their support and to Axis for the makeover of the building." Peter Warr, aged 79, added: "The new centre is much bigger than our last one - it will take some getting used to but I really like it."
