East Street Hub: Helping local entrepreneurs
Peabody has partnered with Hatch Enterprise to bring a new lease of life to three underused shops on London’s historic East Street Market.
Hatch is one of the UK’s leading enterprise charities, providing dedicated enterprise support to local entrepreneurs, with a social purpose, across Lambeth and Southwark.
Hatch’s goal is to help 1,000 people build businesses out of the things that they love and care about most by 2020.
Changes in East Street
Peabody will refurbish the shops and restore their facades, helping Hatch to launch 55 East (an enterprise hub for the local community).
Once we refurbish the three shops, which we are due to complete in the Autumn, Hatch will move in and create:
- an enterprise hub with co-working space for around 20 people which can also be used as training space for around 30 people
- a community café which will focus on high quality coffee and sustainable, locally produced food and drink
- a retail and event space for local designers and creators to sell their products. This will also double up as a space for community-led making and designing workshops
Peabody and Hatch Enterprise will offer training and skill-sharing opportunities for local traders and entrepreneurs, helping them to grow their businesses and also offer Peabody residents an opportunity to launch their own business or social enterprise.
Martin O’Donnell, Peabody’s Head of Community, said: “We are delighted that Hatch will play a key role in our aspiration to support the regeneration of East Street Market, and to provide opportunities for local residents to start and grow their own businesses.”
