Young people taking part in the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta

Ten young Peabody residents prepare to sail at the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta adventure.

We are sponsoring ten young residents to sail on a trip of a lifetime as part of Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta.

Organised by Sail Training International, this annual event is aimed at young people aged 16 to 25. They will sail from Greenwich, via Sines in Portugal, Bermuda and Boston, then onto Quebec in Canada to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.

The ships will be anchored in the Thames alongside two Tall Ships festival villages which will offer live music and entertainment. These will be located at the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greenwich Town Centre and the Royal Arsenal riverside in Woolwich.

Stephen Burns, Peabody's Executive Director Communities, said: "This is a once in a lifetime experience for these ten young people who will be fully integrated into the crew and responsible for running the vessel 24/7. We are committed to opportunities that help young people learn new skills, enhance their job prospects and improve their life chances."

Billy Lovejoy

Seventeen-year-old Thamesmead resident, Billy Lovejoy said:
"I have wanted to join the Navy since I was 13-years-old – my grandad was in the Navy and it really appeals to me. My school, Woolwich Poly, know this and when they found out about this experience, they put my name forward. I can't believe I was picked and cannot wait to take part - it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, thank you Peabody."

Bernie Ekomisa

17-year-old Peabody resident, Bernie Ekomisa (above) from the London Borough of Waltham Forest said:
"I'd like to say a massive thank you to Peabody for enabling me to go on this adventure. I have been on a ferry to France before and I've done some rowing but this experience will be something completely different. I am looking forward to the two weeks away, although may get homesick and I'm not sure how I will cope without access to WiFi."
