Exhibition African Threads - Hackney Style opens at Hackney Museum

The 'African Threads - Hackney Style - 400 years of textiles journeys from Africa to Hackney' exhibition explores Hackney’s historic ties with Africa through fabric and fashion and features costumes created by members of Peabody's fashion and textile group, Threads.

These 14-16 year-olds worked on their creations over the summer, producing creative prints which are being showcased at the museum until January 2016.

Hackney inspires creativity

Janine Francois, senior Fashion Trainer on the Threads project said:

"This was so much more than a fun art project we did over the summer. The young women wanted the prints they produced to bring the diverse community of Hackney together.

Their designs are creative representations of how they feel about Hackney as a great place to live.

It’s not every day that teenagers from Hackney can have their work exhibited alongside world-renowned artists like Yinka Shonibare, and for me that is a huge achievement."

Project participant Haleema Saadiq said:

"If I could summarise this print and this experience in three words it would be: Inspirational, community and heritage."

Black History Month

The launch of the exhibition on 1 October marked the beginning of a series of events and activities, organised by Hackney Council to celebrate Black History Month.

As well as taking in the stunning costumes and photographs of local people, visitors can discover how textiles were produced in different regions of Africa and the meaning behind some of their bold designs.

Cllr Jonathan McShane, Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture said:

"This exhibition is one of the highlights of Black History Season here in Hackney. The hard work that the local young people have put in to their creations is wonderful to see. I would encourage you to come along and see this must-see exhibition for yourself."
