Peabody resident named Apprentice of the Year
Recognition for Shaquan, 22, at the Mayor's Fund for London Awards.
An apprentice with Ardmore, our building contractor, Shaquan has been helping to build homes at Pembury Circus.
Shaquan first contacted us after more than four years of being out of employment, education and training.
Shaquan (centre-left) has been with Ardmore for two years
He secured a bricklaying apprenticeship after attending an open day, and now regularly trains new members of staff.
He has also voluntarily been mentoring students interested in construction, and supporting those with behavioural difficulties by encouraging them into apprenticeships.
“I have always wanted to work in construction so this is a dream come true," says Shaquan. "I am really enjoying my apprenticeship and I can’t thank Peabody enough. If it wasn’t for them helping me in the beginning then I wouldn’t be where I am now, doing something I enjoy.”
Stephen Howlett, our Chief Executive, says "We are very proud of Shaquan and hope his achievements will inspire others."
We're currently developing 600 new apprenticeships through our 8,000-new home development pipeline. That's one apprentice for every 13 homes we deliver in London.
We're also also investing £150,000 each year to facilitate direct apprenticeships. Last August we took on 10 apprentices aged 16–24.
