Domestic violence

Domestic violence is any threatened or actual violence carried out by one person on another within the home. It can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It can be against men, women, adults or children. It includes violence from a partner, or from an ex-partner who does not live in the property, and violence between brothers and sisters, parents and children or between any people who share a home.

Domestic abuse occurs when power and control is exerted on one person by another. Children are also affected by domestic abuse (be it mental, verbal or physical) and this raises child protection issues.

Peabody's community safety team deal with all referrals of domestic abuse and are trained to ensure the safety of the victim and family always remains a priority. Once referred the team complete a risk identification checklist (RIC) to assess how at risk the individual or family is.

Peabody may take legal action against anybody who commits, causes or threatens domestic violence, which could lead to the offender losing their home.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, it is important that you get independent legal advice to make sure that you know all of your options before you take any action.

Peabody does not have any emergency housing but if you want to leave your home, your estate manager or community safety officer can give you information about local agencies, such as the council, who provide emergency accommodation. The community safety officer/neighbourhood manager, with your permission, may also refer you to a tenant support worker who will support you through the process and has access to specialist advice services.
