Reducing CO2 and adapting our homes
Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated through our business activities and from our homes is our priority.
Our aim is to reduce CO2 emissions from our homes in line with the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) target of a 60% reduction by 2025 and an 80% reduction by 2050.
We will also work on reducing demand for heat and electricity by implementing energy efficiency improvements and teaching our customers how to use less electricity, and looking at delivering more low, zero carbon technologies to heat and power our homes. View the full strategy for a list of detailed objectives.
What we have done so far:
- Worked with De Montfort University since 2005 researching how we can make deep CO2 emissions in our homes (see Peabody energy model).
- In 2005 we refurbished two 1950’s tower blocks (see Roscoe Towers, Islington) to achieve a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions. These blocks already meet the 2025 Greater London Authority target for CO2 reduction.
- We are installing smart meters on our estates to monitor communal lighting and to reduce energy.
- Prior to installing smart meters in our homes, we provided customers with Real Time Displays (RTD’s) which monitored energy usage so customers can understand how they are using electricity and where they can reduce it by unnecessary use.
- In 2008 we measured the carbon footprint of our head office for the first time.
