Land-use, open space management and biodiversity
There are many things we can do to help protect and enhance the capital’s spaces and species and engage our customers in the process.
The role of green spaces owned and managed by housing associations is often under-valued and we aim to continue to raise the profile of our open spaces and improve them for our customers.
In 2009-10 we will produce an Open Spaces Strategy that will set out our plans for our open spaces and identify opportunities for improvement. We will continue to actively engage our customers in the management of our green spaces.
What have we been doing?
- In 2003 we helped establish Neighbourhoods Green with the aim of raising the profile of housing association green spaces with key governmental agencies and other partners.
- We have developed a partnership with the Forestry Commission and Trees for Cities.
- In 2005 we published ‘With or Without a Garden’ to inform our customers how they can influence and improve their gardens and estates.
- We own and manage 10,000 trees that support local biodiversity. We have bird boxes on about 70 of our estates and will roll out more during 2010.
