Sustainability strategy
We are committed to delivering sustainable neighbourhoods for everyone - now and in the future. It is fundamental to our core aims of providing desirable homes and thriving communities.
We published our first sustainability strategy in 2002. We have now published the sustainability strategy 2009-12 (PDF, 864KB) which sets out how we will minimise the negative and maximise the positive impact we will have on the environment over the coming years.
The strategy will be reviewed and updated annually, with stakeholders, to take account of changes in legislation and good practice. An annual report will be produced highlighting our progress.
We will be focusing on six key themes:
- Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and adapting our homes to climate change.
- Delivering affordable warmth.
- Increasing water efficiency.
- What we buy - buying more sustainably.
- Waste - reduce, reuse and recycle.
- Land-use, open space management and biodiversity.
The strategy sets out what we will achieve over the next three years (2009-12), for our offices, existing homes and new homes. This will be achieved through a series of strategic objectives, but our planning will extend beyond 2012, to meet and exceed statutory environmental targets and how we will measure our progress against them.
The targets to make it happen are explained in the three year sustainability action plan.
