Carbon report

Peabody has published a report by the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development at De Montfort University about how we can meet the Greater London Authority's target, of a 60% reduction in CO2 by 2025, and deliver zero carbon Peabody estates by 2030.

The carbon report (PDF, 448KB) and appendices (PDF, 300KB) sets out the broad refurbishment approaches available to Peabody and provides detailed estimates on the likely cost in delivering these reductions.

Part of our 21st Century Peabody report shows that we can meet the Greater London Authority's target, but not by our efforts alone. We need a reduction in customer demand for energy and carbon content of grid electricity to reduce. But even if the national grid reduces its reliance on carbon energy by 50% and energy demand from customers’ declines slightly, the estimated costs to Peabody of meeting the 2025 target could be at least £100m to £150m.

This is over and above our existing planned expenditure on home improvements until 2030 and assumes significant sources of grant funding, including 'feed-in tariffs' and area based projects funded by energy suppliers.

Steve Howlett said: 'This is a really valuable and timely piece of research that shows how serious we are about stepping up to the challenge of climate change and securing long-term affordable warmth for our customers. We hope that it is of relevance to our partners in the housing association sector and to policy makers'.
