Paying rent

How to pay

To make things as easy as possible, we have provided a range of ways in which you can pay your rent:

Residents are expected to pay their rent regularly and on time. Non-payment of rent is taken seriously and Peabody has strict rent recovery procedures in place. Rent statements are sent out four times a year to keep resident as up-to-date as possible with their rent accounts. If you require statements on a more frequent basis please contact us.

If you would like to request a balance of your rent account or statement, or register to receive your rent statement by email please contact Peabody Direct.

Direct debit
Peabody accepts payments for rents, service charges, garages, parking spaces and stores by direct debit. We will only collect the amount that has been agreed with you, and we operate under the Direct Debit Guarantee, which guarantees a full and immediate refund of any monies taken in error. We will expect your direct debit payment to be made in advance.

If you have a direct debit payment that fails more than three consecutive times, this facility will be withdrawn and you may be liable for Peabody's administration costs.

If you wish to pay by direct debit complete the direct debit form (pdf, 232KB). If you don't have a bank account, you can find out about opening a basic account here.

Post Office
Once your rent account is set up you will receive a rent card. If you have not received this by the end of the first week of your tenancy please call Peabody Direct. You will receive a plastic swipe card through the post for each type of payment that you need to make for example:

  • rent (including any charge for heating and hot water or water rates)
  • garages
  • parking spaces
  • stores
  • home contents insurance

Payment at the Post Office can be by cash and/or cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Post Office Ltd. You will be issued with a receipt each time you pay. This is your proof of payment, so please ensure that you keep it somewhere safe.

Online using the Allpay website

Arrange payments directly from your housing benefit
You will need to contact the local authority that pays your housing benefit. The local authority will ask you to complete and sign a form that enables them to pay us directly.

You can use the Directgov website directory (www.direct.gov.uk) to find your local authority.

Visit www.entitledto.com to get an estimate of how much benefit you could be entitled to.

Please note: the 'entitled to' calculator will give you an estimate of your potential benefit entitlement but this does not guarantee entitlement.

Opening a bank account
Having a bank account that allows you to make payments by direct debit or standing order can save you money and help you pay rent and bills on time.

Some banks offer a basic bank account, which provides an alternative for people whose credit history makes it difficult for them to open a current account. A basic bank account doesn’t offer an overdraft, but it does let you pay bills by direct debit and it may allow you to set up standing orders and give you a debit card to pay for things.

You can find out more about basic bank accounts through Moneymadeclear, a free service that offers jargon-free, impartial advice on a range of financial issues. To find out more, visit the Moneymadeclear website or contact the helpline on 0300 500 5000.
