Due to be held on Tuesday 6 December at the Royal Festival Hall, the inaugural Youth Oskars will celebrate the achievements of young people making positive contributions in London communities.
Funded by the Big Lottery Fund and organised by Peabody, one of London’s oldest and largest housing associations and community regeneration agencies, with Waterloo based youth action group SE1 United, Youth Oskars 2011 will recognise young people from 20 youth groups across the capital.
Over 250 young people are expected to attend the event. Richard Griffiths, Peabody Our Say Our Way Project Co-ordinator, said:
“The theme of Youth Oskars is ‘unite through success’. We want to challenge the destructive ‘feral youth’ stereotype and prove that young people can be creative educators, organisers, collaborators and change agents, and that they can cross postcodes to celebrate each other achievements.”
Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- Inspiration
- Education
- Sports and volunteering
- Creativity
- Young Leaders awards
- Sports Leaders Awards
- The Jack Petchey Awards
- Youth Voice award
- Youth Champion Award
Youth Oskars 2011 is part of Peabody's Our Say Our Way project for young people aged 12-19, funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
The project aims to increase the awareness, knowledge and participation of young people in decisions made within their local community and increase social cohesion through positive community activity.
Our Say Our Way also aims to reduce disengagement caused by negative perceptions of young people. Participants in the project commit to developing a local youth action group and make positive contributions to their communities through social action projects which develop their skills in the process.
