Residents on the Whitecross estate in Islington had reason to celebrate recently with the opening of a new community centre and the launch of a new WiFi service.

A good time was had by all at the opening ceremony on Friday, 30 April, especially when the Peabody Well-being wagon rolled by offering massages, gardening tips and banana bread from everyone's favourite cook-caretaker, Elvis Campbell.

Steve Howlett, Peabody's chief executive, came along to cut the ribbon and generally join in the fun.

Putting the event in context, he said "This work is all part of our 21st Century Peabody vision (PDF).

"It's about providing 21st century homes and services that meet the needs of current and future generations. But it's also about tackling problems of deprivation, low skills and worklessness and creating sustainable and vibrant communities that are truly integrated with their surroundings."

The new WiFi service has been funded by EC1 New Deal and is available to all residents free of charge. Those who don't have a computer or laptop can simply pop along to the community centre and use one of the new computers.
