Do you have friends or family looking for a rewarding social hobby that costs nothing? Peabody is calling for patient, community-orientated volunteers to assist with the provision of dinner to people aged 50-plus, at Lomond Centre community cafe, Southwark.
Volunteers should be interested in and have the ability to relate to older people. They will be required to help the cafe's staff with general duties and assist customers with limited mobility.
Activities co-ordinator at Lomond House, Lorraine Spenceley, said: "The cafe is a warm and welcoming environment. For many of our current volunteers and indeed our customers, it is a home away from home."
"Volunteers are important in making our customers feel as comfortable as they can be at the cafe. From carrying an older person's tray from the service area to their table or talking to our customers, down to working in the kitchen, their contribution is invaluable to us."
Volunteering reaps many rewards - not only for the community which they serve, but for the volunteer themselves. Volunteers will make new friends, enhance their resume, become an active member of the community and in general, gain a level of personal satisfaction that only comes through altruistic work.
Lorraine said: "We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and walks of life. Maybe you are a student or unemployed person looking for work experience? Or perhaps you would like to become more involved in your community? You could even be a full-time local employee who wants to give a bit back during your lunch hour.
"Whatever your reason, volunteering at the Lomond Community Centre Cafe will definitely prove to be a rewarding experience."
If you are interested, know of anyone who wishes to volunteer or to find out more information contact Lorraine Spenceley. Tel: 0207 021 4053 or email: Lorraine.Spenceley@peabody.org.uk.
Lomond House runs many activities for the over-50s such as Pilates, t'ai chi, movement and relaxation, line dancing, craft classes and a drama group, just to name a few.
