Volunteers had an opportunity to shine at the event, held by Hackney Hosts (a group of Hackney’s 2012 volunteers), on 7 June at Gillet Square. They were praised for their contributions and celebrated the achievement they have made in their borough so far.
After signing up to new projects, the volunteers enjoyed the great music and a BBQ lunch. This gave them time to reflect on what they have done and filled them with a real sense of pride. Competitive games were then held during the afternoon.
Volunteer Paul Hawkins, said: "Last month I was at the BBC radio bus event in Dalston and was on the market stall talking to people about the 2012 games and how they could get involved in volunteering. The highlight of my volunteering experience so far has been meeting the 2012 Team from Hackney Council."
Volunteering at the Eastern Curve Gardens project, Brian Atiase, said: "I recently helped a disabled girl who visited the garden and it felt very worthwhile."
Adaku Okoro, Hackney Host volunteer, said: "It was clear to see that Brian Atiase’s experience of working at the Gardens project had a huge impact on him, which highlights the purpose of volunteering. Volunteering is about making a difference to the lives of others. Brian has evidently seen through his work at the Eastern Curve Garden, that there is great joy and fulfilment to be had in helping others.
Karthiga Kulendran, Peabody’s Peer Befriender, said: "The volunteers have been involved in a lot of training lately and this was the first time they got to relax and enjoy themselves.
"The day was a huge success as many of the volunteers who signed up for the volunteering opportunities have already started their placements, following talks with local organisations at the event.
She continued: "The volunteers have come a long way from when they first signed-up and it’s nice to see them come out of their shell. They’re a great group of people and I’m proud to have them represent the project and Hackney at the Olympics!"
Peabody’s volunteer coordinator Yolanda Sissing, said: "Our Hackney Hosts have been making waves across the borough. Celebrating their involvement during Volunteers Week is the best way we can highlight their achievements.
"Many of our volunteers are unemployed and have not volunteered before. Getting involved in this project has given them the opportunity to learn about the benefits of volunteering, not only in preparation for the 2012 Games but by getting involved in their local community."
Partner organisations, working with Peabody, on the day were Poached Creative, Universal Board Games, Hackney Play Bus, Peabody’s Activate Team, SkyWay, Gillet Square, Peabody’s Treads Project, Cleanup UK, Hackney Council’s 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Unit , East London Food Access, City and Hackney Carers Centre and St Joseph’s Hospic. They were at the event to promote what they do and generate more interest among the community.
Would you like to become a Hackney Host volunteer?
By this summer, Hackney Council, which runs the Hackney Hosts programme with Peabody, will have recruited 100 residents – volunteers who will become well known in the borough during the lead up to the 2012 Games.
The Hosts receive free training in first aid, presentation skills and learn about the Games, and will be supported to find work. Many of the hosts have also chosen to become 2012 Champions, helping to promote the ethos of the Games and Games-related activities within their own communities.
To get involved contact our volunteer coordinator, email:your.time@peabody.org.uk or tel: 020 7021 4154.
