Tree-planting on Victoria Park estate

05 July 2011

On Monday, a tree planting ceremony was held to welcome residents of Victoria Park estate in Hackney into the Peabody community.

Victoria Park estate was transferred into Peabody’s ownership in February, along with the Millbank, Lee Green and Cumberland Market estates. All of the estates were formerly owned by The Crown Estate.

Steve Howlett, chief executive of Peabody, Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, and chair of the Victoria Park estate resident’s association, Joannie Andrews, shared spade duties.

Speaking to residents, staff and other members of the local community who attended the event, Steve Howlett said: “We’re extremely proud to take over The Crown Estate legacy. Peabody will ensure communities like Victoria Park stay together and continue to flourish and that these homes continue to be available for key workers in London.”

Meg Hillier MP congratulated residents who campaigned against The Crown Estate homes being sold to private developers.

A similar tree-planting event took place recently on Cumberland Market estate. Tree-planting events for Millbank and Lee Green estates are planned for later in the year.
