Tree-planting at Cumberland Market

22 June 2011

Stephen Howlett, Peabody’s chief executive, went along to Cumberland Market last Thursday 16 June to plant a tree to celebrate former Crown Estate residents joining the Peabody community. Frank Dobson, Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, was also there to help with the spade work.

It rained hard on the day – quite good for planting, apparently – but that didn’t deter anyone as residents, staff and other members of the local community, including Leader of Camden councillor Nasim Ali and his colleagueTulip Sidique, gathered to mark this special occasion.

Speaking beforehand in the residents’ hall, Mr Dobson expressed his delight at being there and thanked everyone for their hard work during a “brilliant co-ordinated campaign”, particularly Steve Smith, Chair of the Cumberland Market Resident Association, Shireen Bilomoria, former co-chair and the Cumberland Market housing team.

Stephen Howlett also expressed his thanks to everyone involved. He emphasised how proud Peabody felt taking on the Crown Estates legacy and the importance of ensuring these homes continue to be available for key workers in London. “It’s now,” he said “all about moving forward. Today is a celebration of our shared future together.”

Tree-planting events are also planned at other former Crown Estates, including Victoria Park on 4 July.
