Staff at many of our centres help residents/visitors gain the skills and qualifications required to get back into work.
Recently at the Pembury Centre a satisfied customer emailed to highlight how impressive a service they had received and how it helped get them back into employment.
The customer said:
"I am writing about the course I attended at the Pembury Learning Centre. I was made redundant towards the end of 2008 and was unemployed for about seven months. During that time I signed-on and received Jobseekers Allowance. My dealings with the government agencies, involved in the welfare system, were frustrating at the best of times and at no point did I receive any help with actually finding employment, in fact most of the time they were a hindrance."
"I did struggle to find a job. Thankfully there are places like the Pembury Centre which I paid a visit to one day with the hope of updating my Excel skills. I subsequently completed an ECDL course and attended a job search course at the centre, one afternoon a week.
"The staff at the centre are very knowledgeable and treated everyone with respect and through their hard work I managed to find a new job and utilise some of the skills I learnt whilst there.
"I have no doubt that without their help I would still be unemployed.
"I wanted to praise the staff in doing an excellent job as they should be commended for all their hard work.
"I congratulate Peabody. Keep up the good work".
Learn Direct award
Another positive story is about a now Peabody-employed member of staff, Sunanta Phattanavibul.
Sunanta signed up to the Learn Direct training course in English literacy and numeracy at the Clapham Centre.
After finishing the course she achieved a National English Literacy and Numeracy (level2) certificate, was introduced to Peabody and invited to volunteer as an administrator - this continued onto part-time and eventually full-time employment at Peabody.
Due to her success and determination in achieving the qualification so quickly, the staff at the Clapham Centre decided to nominate Sunanta for the Learn Direct Award.
Sunanta was awarded a certificate for Learning fo
r Work Award and also won the first prize for Progression Award in the London region with Learn Direct.
Sunanta said, "I couldn’t have achieved this or got so far without the staff at Clapham, they are the ones who do all the hard work and they should be commended for it."
"I would like to say a special thanks to Miu Tai Ho who was my support learner.
"They all provide maximum support to the residents or anyone interested in gaining work skills. They provide many courses and skills to get back into work, such as; helping you to do your CV, guide you for your interview and much more.
"Every year someone wins an award like me, next year it could be you".
