Tackling domestic abuse

12 October 2011

Just over a quarter of the cases our Community Safety Team dealt with during 2010-11 involved domestic abuse and our residents' satisfaction with how we handle these cases is 15% higher than our average score for other categories of anti-social behaviour.

Gudrun (‘Guddy’) Burnet, Peabody's Community Safety Team Leader, said: "Being able to spot signs of domestic abuse is vital and is only achievable by training all employees, providing them the skills and support in order to handle reports effectively and sensitively."

She added: "We at Peabody have the mechanisms in place to deal with each case sensitively, giving the victims trust that we will help them through from beginning to end. It is our responsibility to support and safeguard them from further abusive behaviour. The stats show for themselves that the training is working and if we could roll this out nationally, how many more victims of abuse can we save!"

As a result of this work, we've now set up a special training course to help housing professionals deal with victims of domestic abuse. Developed by Guddy, the course will be available to all Peabody staff and offered to other housing providers too.

You can find out more about the course here (PDF, 689KB). You can also contact Guddy on 020 7021 4184.
