Save money with a home energy monitor

20 February 2009

According to the Energy Saving Trust, households spend around 8% of their electricity bills on standby power. Throw in the cost of leaving lights on in empty rooms and it soon adds up. But how can we become more aware of all the ways we’re wasting energy?

Peabody has a number of home energy monitors, available to loan to our residents free of charge. Clip the monitor to the cable from your electricity meter and it measures the amount of power you’re using. That’s transmitted to a display that you can keep anywhere in your home, giving you real-time information on your electricity use. Using the monitor for six weeks can show you how you’re spending your electricity bill – and cutting down on waste could save you between 5 and 15%.
