Supportive leaning - people with learning difficultiesOrchard Hill College, which specialises in providing a supportive learning environment for young people and adults with severe/profound learning difficulties and/or disabilities, is to open a new education centre at Peabody's pioneering carbon neutral BedZED development in Sutton, Surrey.

The new centre will be opened on Monday 25 January by the mayor of Sutton, Councillor Margaret Court. It will join similar Orchard Hill College centres at Wallington, Carshalton, Kennington and Tulse Hill.

Stephen Howlett, Peabody's chief executive, said, "We're delighted to welcome Orchard Hill College to BedZED. The college’s work to improve people’s lives directly complements Peabody's aim to ensure as many people as possible have a real sense of purpose and a strong feeling of belonging, as well as a good home. The new learning Centre will add to the sense of pride and community spirit that is as much a hallmark of BedZED as its groundbreaking use of technology to promote sustainable living."

Dr Caroline Allen OBE, Orchard Hill College principal, said, "The partnership between Orchard Hill College and Peabody, which the opening of this new centre heralds, is an exciting one. Both organisations share a similar ethos and a desire for community cohesion."

Completed by Peabody in 2002, BedZED was the largest carbon neutral eco-community in the UK, incorporating innovative approaches to energy conservation and environmental sustainability.
