Peabody resident wins award at National Digital Conference

23 May 2011

Nigel McKeown, Peabody resident from Lambeth, was presented with an award for his commitment to digital inclusion at the National Digital Conference dinner (11 May). The award was presented by Clive Anderson and Rt Hon Sir Francis Maud.

This award was given to those who have shown enthusiasm, commitment and progress by learning how to use digital technology over the past 12 months.

"It was a great evening - I’ve put the award on my mantelpiece and it was good to meet Clive Anderson, he was really funny" said Nigel.

Out of 20 nominations Nigel was chosen for his passion for getting the most out of computers and the web. In the short period of time Nigel has been attending Net Worx (computer) sessions where he has learnt to do many things such as set up and use email and Skype to communicate with friends and family, shop online and upload, edit and organise digital photos (by going on a digital photography course at Brue House).

Nigel’s next challenge is to create a website where he can share his beloved collection of antique guns with others.

Peabody’s Youth Project Co-ordinator Sabrina Jantuah, said: "Nigel’s determination and positive attitude to embracing digital technology has been a real inspiration to other learners and our volunteers. He has made huge progress in a short space of time and is certainly a great advocate for getting online!"

Nigel McKeown, said: "The Net Worx programme is fantastic. I couldn’t have learned this on my own. It’s a tremendous idea and has helped me a lot, plus it’s all free so you can’t go wrong – I couldn’t have afforded to pay for this."

Net Worx is a volunteering project, bringing young and older people together to tackle ‘digital exclusion’ – the divide between people who already make the most of technology and those who are left out. Find out more about Net Worx here.

We hold Net Worx sessions at locations across London. For further information contact Sabrina Jantuah on 07534 282 184 or email:Sabrina.Jantuah@peabody.org.uk
