Peabody learner wins top award

03 December 2009

Ganna Ali, a learner at Peabody’s Clapham Centre, received the Participant of the Year Award at the first European Social Fund (ESF) Awards at City Hall in London.

The awards were held to honour the outstanding achievements of Londoners who have improved their confidence and skills through innovative training and employment schemes funded through London's £700 million ESF Programme.

Ganna, who is from Ukraine, has completed Personal Best and Skills for Life courses at Clapham Centre, gaining literacy, numeracy, IT and job searching skills.

She said:

‘I was so surprised. I didn’t expect to win anything! I feel proud for the whole centre. It’s so good that it can help people like me to learn. So I share the award with Clapham Centre.’

She added:

‘If you are thinking of visiting a Peabody learning centre, you should. Come and follow my example. I have gained new skills and improved my possibilities. With the tutors’ help you can do it.’

Peabody’s Clapham Centre is one of six Peabody learning centres in London. The centres offer free training courses in a wide range of subjects.

Almost 150 delegates attended the awards ceremony including London’s deputy mayor, Richard Barnes, and the mayor’s advisor for health and youth opportunities, Pamela Chesters.
