Peabody Avenue, the £10.5 million development in Pimlico, has just been announced as a project winner in the 2010 Housing Design Awards.
Winners were revealed at a lunchtime awards ceremony on 8 July at Banqueting House in Whitehall. According to the HDA, "These schemes illustrate the emerging consensus on how to design homes that people would want to live in over the longer term."
The awards are officially partnered by the industry's three key professional institutions: architects through the RIBA, planners through the RTPI and surveyors through the RICS. The Department of Health is another partner, having originally set up the programme in 1948 – at the same time as the NHS – to emphasise the link between good housing and health.

Developed by Peabody and constructed by Mansell, Peabody Avenue has been designed by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins in partnership with local residents, Westminster City Council and English Heritage.

Another approach to the development
There will be a mix of 1-bed and 3-bed apartments in the block with generous recessed balconies accessed from living rooms or bedrooms or both.
One third of the 55 new homes will be shared ownership and all homes will link up to the Pimlico district heating system. The development is due to be completed in March 2011.
Peabody’s head of development, Claire Bennie said: “We are really pleased to have won an award for this scheme which is the result of a true collaboration between Peabody, our residents and our design team.
"We have shown how modern design can slot well into a difficult site in a conservation area, providing 21st century homes and public realm in the inner city."
Principal funders include the Homes and Communities Agency, which contributed ₤5.7 million to the project, and Westminster Council, which contributed ₤1.9 million.
