Peabody Apprenticeships are available in various departments. We offer a structured training programme, career support and guidance, internal and external study opportunities, and of course the chance to gain real work experience, with genuine prospects of employment.
We caught up with Alex Jon Horan (pictured below), one of Peabody's Environment Caretaker Apprentices, to find out more.

"I was on the dole, labouring on and off. The Jobcentre recommended the Hugh Cubitt centre, King's Cross. I went and got help to produce a CV, advice on potential career options and support in looking for work.
"Then I met Jeff Thomas [Peabody Employment Broker] who told me about Peabody's apprenticeship scheme. I liked the sound of the Environment Caretaker Apprentice role; the responsibility, working with people, the chance to be outside.
"I applied and was offered an interview - my first proper interview. Jeff helped me develop my interview skills and I felt more prepared.
"I was interviewed by three people. Head of Estate Services Tony Molloy, the head of the residents' association and another caretaker. I was nervous and didn't think I got the job.
I was wrong! I got the job and started work at the Tachbrook Estate in August this year. I am one of Peabody's first apprentices. Five of us in total were taken on."

What's a typical day?
"My days are varied. In the mornings making sure the entrances and the bin chutes are safe and clear to use. Then I might check and clean the handrails and the walls. In the afternoon, it's time to work on the garden areas.
"There's a lot of interaction with people on the estate. I talk with representatives from the residents' association and liaise with external contractors."
What about training?
"I attend an external college where I am doing an NVQ in Cleaning and Environmental Caretaking. I've done lots of other courses; lone-working, diversity training, working at heights."

What would you say to other people considering a Peabody apprenticeship?
"Just go for it! Especially young people. About 80 per cent of my mates are on the dole.
"This job's enjoyable. Whenever I get frustrated I think back to how things were when I was on the dole. Peabody is a big part of my life. I'd recommend going to the Hugh Cubitt centre to find out more."
We hope to run another Apprenticeship scheme in early 2012. Please keep checking our Working for Peabody section for vacancies, or as Alex says, visit our Hugh Cubitt centre in King's Cross to find out more.
