Peabody 150th anniversary: the launch

05 December 2011

We held a reception at the Museum of London to officially begin counting down to our 150th anniversary in 2012.

Attendees heard the thoughts of Martha Lane Fox. The founder of lastminute.com and UK "digital champion" singled out Peabody as one of the organisations playing a crucial role in Race Online's 2012 goal of getting more people online and taking advantage of technology.

Louise Casey, Director General at the Department for Communities and Local Government, highlighted the role Peabody plays in engaging "hard to reach" sections of society, especially in light of the summer's disturbances.

Steve Howlett (pictured below right with Peabody Chair Chris Strickland and Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Simon Hughes on the left), Peabody's Chief Executive, spoke of the upcoming events and activities celebrating Peabody's 150th anniversary. These will be part of our ongoing community programmes; helping people into jobs and training, encouraging healthy, active lifestyles; ensuring people are not left isolated or alone.

Stephen Burns, Executive Director of New Business,  underlined the importance of the Peabody projects helping us to combat poverty and social exclusion, such as Bruce House, Net Worx and our community open days.

Chris Strickland, Peabody chair, closed the launch event by outlining some of the ways people can get involved with Peabody's 150th anniversary programme.

We'll be posting up news of upcoming Peabody 150 events so please keep checking back, or follow us on Twitter.
