Moving to Digital TV

02 July 2010

How Peabody is progressing its Digital TV switchover programme

Television services in the UK will go completely digital between 2008 and 2012. All viewers will therefore need to convert or upgrade their TV equipment because the old analogue television signal will be switched off.

Peabody is rolling out a programme across most of its properties and is well within schedule to meet the London switchover deadline of 2012.

Moving to digital should be a simple and hassle-free process. Before work begins, residents will receive a 'survey of viewing needs' to ascertain their preferred TV options. They will be contacted two to three weeks before work begins and, at that point, a liaison offer will arrange a convenient time to do the necessary internal work.

Residents will need to be linked to a receptive aerial to pick up a digital signal and work will shortly be carried out on the 1,979 homes on the Pembury estate as well as properties in Bethnal Green.

So, what will benefits will digital TV bring? According to Digital UK, the not-for-profit organisation leading the process, going digital will mean:

  • A greater choice of TV channels.

  • New features such as on-screen listings, interactivity, audio description and subtitling for people with visual and audio impairments.

  • Optional additional channels and services including premium channels (e.g movies, sports), broadband and telephony.
