Improving lives with Activate London

01 April 2010

Activate London has improved the health and well-being of almost 21,000 Londoners of all ages and backgrounds since its launch in 2008.

Almost 21,000 Londoners of all ages and backgrounds have benefited from Activate London, our community-led well-being programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund – on track to achieve our target of at least 43,000 beneficiaries by the end of 2012.

With residents and partners we've created a diverse portfolio of more than 80 community-led Activate London projects, themed around healthy eating, active lifestyles and good mental health. The projects are available in boroughs across London.

Residents have taken the lead in the planning and delivery of many of the projects, gaining skills and experience and ensuring that the projects will continue beyond the life of the funding (2008-2012).

Here's a taster of what's on offer:

  • Pukka Tukka: A project teaching young people how to shop, cook and eat healthily on a budget. At the end they'll prepare and serve a three-course meal to local guests. Pukka!
  • On Your Bike!: Many of our residents own bikes but lack the cash to keep them in good running order. On Your Bike! offers regular training sessions, from fixing flatties to wrangling wheels.
  • Cockney Sparrow: A partnership with London Wildlife Trust to create wildlife havens on Peabody estates.
  • Shoots and Spices: A grow-your-own herbs and spices project, teaching people how to reduce fat, sugar and salt, and save money by creating taste sensations out of inexpensive ingredients.
  • Tennis for Tots: Fun, lively sports sessions for children of all ages to help them discover and develop their athletic abilities through play.
