Important news on Cold Weather Payments

09 January 2009

The summer rises in fuel costs are hitting many of us hard, especially as winter temperatures are plunging. Hardest hit are those on means-tested benefits – who increasingly have to consider whether to heat or eat.

However, when the recorded temperature drops below freezing – or is forecast to be below freezing – over a whole week, this triggers Cold Weather Payments. These should automatically be awarded to the claimants of:

• Income Support – but only where a disability premium is being paid
• Pension Credit – either savings or guarantee credit
• Income Support or Job Seeker's Allowance, where the claimant has a child under five.

Payments have been increased to £25 per week this year. If you think you might be eligible and haven’t received a payment, please call 0800 022 4040 and ask to speak to the Welfare Benefits Team.
