A walk to discover the life and legacy of the man who founded Peabody - George Peabody.
The walk will start at Spitalfields and continue onto the fringes of the city to the first Peabody estate in Commercial Street. From there you will trace the history of his life, legacy and philanthropy in London.
You will visit two further Peabody estates, Whitecross Street and Roscoe Street to look at the changing styles and effects of bombing during World War Two.
After passing the Gold Lane Estate you will go through Barbican and identify Peabody’s association with the city, first as a merchant and then as a banker. You will also see ties with the Morgan family bank, his City Club and learn of his associations with several Livery companies.
Finally you will pass through narrow alleyways onto Threadneedle Street and the Bank of Scotland and end at the statue of George Peabody outside the Royal Exchange. An account of his funeral at Westminster Abbey will be explained, as well as the final journey back to the country of his birth.
