Energy companies issue credit meter rip-off warning

27 October 2010

The UK's largest energy companies have warned that customers with credit meters are increasingly being targeted by illegal doorstep sales, with over 100,000 households already affected.

Never buy energy on the doorstep

Energy companies never sell to customers door to door – but some householders are being offered illegal top-up by fraudulent salesmen at reductions of as much as 50%. With energy companies able to detect when illegal credit is being used, those targeted by the scam find themselves having to pay a second time.

Prepay energy customers are being urged to buy only from official outlets – PayPoint, Payzone and the Post Office.

Where to get help

The Top-up Safe campaign, launched by the UK's six largest energy companies, aims to raise awareness of the practice and warn consumers of its dangers. For more information, visit the campaign's website.

If you think you may have bought illegal credit, you should contact your energy provider straight away.
