Could you be a Hackney Host volunteer?

08 February 2011

Hackney HostPeabody has launched a new project in partnership with Hackney Council that offers Hackney residents the chance to volunteer in the build-up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hackney Host will give volunteers the opportunity to get involved in events and activities across the borough, with placements in areas like sports coaching, administration and arts. Run from Peabody’s Pembury Estate office, the project aims to recruit 100 volunteers. Participants will have the chance to gain valuable skills and experience, as well as having access to free training and employment support.

“This project will really benefit the residents of Hackney, particularly those who are unemployed, have not volunteered before, are living with disabilities, or who are from ethnic and migrant communities,” explains Yolanda Sissing, Peabody Volunteer Co-ordinator. “Residents will be able to see first-hand how the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games can make a difference to their communities. By 2012, we hope to have 100 Hackney Host volunteers who will be involved in key decisions that will affect how the Games are delivered in the borough.”

“Hackney Council is thrilled to be working with Peabody on this great programme,” says Councillor Guy Nicholson, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for regeneration and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “The Hosts programme offers the people of Hackney a great opportunity to be directly involved in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. It is a great way to join in and gain hands on experience through volunteering.”

Applications for the project are open now. You’ll find more information, including details on how to apply, in our Projects section.
