Barnwell House: another brick on the wall

06 May 2011

Easter school holidays brought an abundant mix of fun activities for the children at Barnwell House estate in Southwark as part of a community arts project. The arts project aims to make the best use of a bare wall within the estate that is crying out for some colour and interest. And what better way to achieve this than get the kids involved in designing the art piece!

The project at Barnwell House estate kicked off with a four-day workshop over the Easter holidays, where children from the estate got together and played games and treasure hunts and explored ideas to design the elements for the empty wall.

Barnwell house 5After collecting ideas from the variety of wildlife and colours in the new garden, they then used their ideas in creating inspirational plasticine, clay and plaster models. Some children made models of insects and flowers and moulds out of their hands, while others wrote poetry and came up with words to describe how they felt about the art event, which will be included in the final art piece.

Sue Forsyth, Peabody IMPROVE Project Manager, said: "It was a great week seeing the children getting really creative and being inspired from their lovely new garden."

The final artwork installed on the wall will be a close representation of the designs created by the children and will be recognition of their input, thereby creating something for the residents to be proud of.

An update of the final artwork will be published at the end of May 2011.
