Add your story to the Peabody Time Capsule!

10 September 2010

In 2012 it will be 150 years since Peabody was founded by George Peabody. One way we’re celebrating this anniversary is with the Peabody Time Capsule, a project to record the stories of residents living on Peabody estates.

The aim of the Time Capsule project is to celebrate the culture and heritage of Peabody communities, inspire people to find out more about their local history, and promote understanding between generations. There will be an online Time Capsule to explore and local Time Capsule exhibitions on Peabody estates.

You can make contributions to the Time Capsule in the form of:

  • stories, poems, lyrics
  • photographs
  • documents, such as ID cards, ration cards, letters, certificates etc
  • objects, such as trophies, badges, signs, medals etc
  • film and video
  • music and voice recordings.

We’ll have a team of Peabody volunteers to help you record your story (more information about volunteering below). If you’re interested in contributing to the Peabody Time Capsule, please contact Neil Young on neil.young@peabody.org.uk or 020 7 021 4210.

Volunteers needed!

To get things started, we’re holding three Time Capsule launch events:

  • Tachbrook estate, Westminster, Wednesday 22 September
  • Whitecross estate, Islington, Monday 27 September
  • Pembury estate, Hackney, Friday 1 October

If you are local to one of these estates, there will be opportunities to take part in the project as a Time Capsule volunteer. Volunteers will be given training and will help with filming, recording oral history and administration.

If you’d like to become a Time Capsule volunteer, please contact Tara Lehane on tara.lehane@peabody.org.uk or 020 7021 4694 to find out more.
