A festival right up to your street!

SouthWestFest brochurePeabody has partnered with SouthWestFest to offer people, in and around Pimlico and South Westminster – or anyone wishing to take part in the two-week festival, the chance to get involved in a variety of fun and engaging activities. The festival focuses on celebrating the great work that goes on in this exciting part of London.

The events start from 24 June and go on until 10 July. You can pick and choose which events you would like to come and see, or come along to all of them!

The choices are endless – you can take part in the free historical walks, get involved in the art classes, gala days, Kings and Queens Carnival parade, enter the fancy dress competition, jump on the river cruise or laugh along at the comedy night… these are some of the shows on offer.

You can also go see an open-air screening of Passport to Pimlico, The Winters Tale or cheers-on Pimlico’s Got Talent. If you that doesn’t take your fancy then pack a picnic and enjoy Pimlico Proms, an open-air concert with a full wind orchestra.

A talent show for anyone who lives or works in SW1. Come along and give us your star turn (family friendly of course!), or watch, vote and decide who should win the trophy and headline the 2012 Festival Gala! Hosted at Pimlico Academy’s newly opened theatre.

Thursday 30 June - Sat 9 July - SouthWestFest SW1 Gallery Exhibition: Local Faces

Time: 12-6pm Tuesday to Friday and 12-4pm Saturday

Talent of all ages will be displaying their creativity, including costumes from the Carnival Parade, and contributions from the following projects; The City of Westminster Archives Centre presents the People’s Record Project - Westminster to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics, involving art projects, intergeneration events and memories of the London 1948 Olympic Games.

Tate Local and Vital Regeneration present Collection – Connection Project. Group photos from the local area have inspired young people to create new digital artwork with artist/film maker Verity-Jane Keefe, exploring belonging and relationships.

Interested in arts and making new friends? Why not come along to our friendly arts taster sessions where you can try your hand at various arts including Painting, Mosaics and clay modelling.

The sessions are free to local older residents and you find our about our free arts classes either in Pimlico or Covent Garden. Our friendly sessions introduce you to a range of different art forms. Try painting, sculpture and still life drawing. Please call 0207 021 4400 to book your place.


Saturday 2 July - Exhibition Open Day, SW1 Gallery
Time: 12pm - 1pm: Celebration and showcasing of the work by local groups
Time: 1pm - 4pm

Saturday 2 July - The Thorney Island Society Archive Open Day

This local amenity and conservation society welcomes visitors to view an exhibition compiled from its extensive historic archive collection of photographs, postcards, maps, books and more. Friday 8 July - Family Art Day

Time: 10am - 2.30pm

A free day of artist-created activities at Tate Britain, especially for children under 5 with mums, dads, and carers who live in Westminster and Lambeth (older brothers and sisters are welcome to join in!). Free tea or coffee for parents and carers.

Friday 8 July - SouthWestFest Comedy Night

Get your Friday night giggles at the Festival’s first ever comedy night! Enjoy a varied evening of live stand up, with a mix of up-and-coming and established acts, and a special guest appearance.

Saturday 9 July - Afternoon tea and 1940’s Sing Along
Pimlico Academy (Venue 8)
Time: 3pm - 6pm

Join us for a dance and sing along to classic music from the 1940’s performed live by top professional singers and musicians. As well as a chance to mingle and enjoy, the afternoon will include tea and information on activities and support available from local groups.

Saturday 9 July - Sunset Screening of Passport to Pimlico (Cert U)

Don’t miss the outdoor screening of this classic 1949 Ealing comedy which tells how the people of Pimlico declare themselves an independent state. Filled with colourful characters and familiar places and faces, the screening will take place at Cardinal Place amphitheatre above Marks and Spencer. Bring along a picnic and enjoy!

Sunday 10 July -Shakespeare in the Square – The Winter’s Tale
St George’s Square Gardens (Venue 3)
Time: 4pm

The acclaimed Hampstead Players present Shakespeare’s A Winters Tale. The play fuses deep romance with comedy and psychological drama, taking the audience on a journey of love, lust, betrayal and forgiveness.

Some seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. In wet weather, the performance will take place in St Saviour’s Church. Donations are welcome in support of St Saviour’s Church Fund.
