America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, is hosting an event at the US Ambassador’s London residence on Friday 27 July to coincide with the launch of the Olympic Games.

Up to 350 children from Peabody estates will join 700 American children and a group of Olympic legends, sports stars and pop acts for a day of Olympic-themed activities.

The event is part of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative, which aims to get more children fit, healthy and active.

Peabody’s Chief Executive Stephen Howlett said:

"We encourage all our residents to lead healthy, active lives, so it’s wonderful to be taking part in this fun day.

“This year Peabody is celebrating its 150th anniversary and the work of our American founder, George Peabody. So participating in this event with Michelle Obama and Ambassador Susman, Peabody’s Honorary President, is even more special."

There will also be an opportunity to meet Olympic and Paralympic legends, including Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci, members of the 2012 US Track and Field Team, David Beckham and other Manchester United legends.

The Wanted, the University of Florida Gator Marching Band, Mark Ronson, Katy B. and Nickelodeon’s DJ J Boogie and Jeff Sutphen will be providing entertainment.

When George Peabody founded the Peabody Donation Fund in 1862, he appointed five trustees.  One of them was Charles Francis Adams, who was the United States Minister in London.

The US minister or ambassador was a Peabody trustee until 2005 when it was agreed that future ambassadors would continue their long-standing relationship with Peabody by becoming our Honorary President.
